Imagine this, if you will…
Instead of Shepard and Anderson being the only ones to beam up to the Citadel at the end, it was Shepard and Kaidan. Bother are heavily injured, and just like Anderson, Kaidan makes it to the Crucible/Citadel control panel first.
But this time it’s Kaidan whom the Illusive Man forces Shepard to shoot… Kaidan’s side that is ruptured by the coerced bullet.
After The Illusive Man is dealt with, Shepard activates the Crucible and then slides down to sit near Kaidan.
Kaidan: Commander.
Shepard: Major.
Shepard: We did it…
Kaidan: Heh, yeah, we did… It’s.. (coughs) a hell of a view.
Shepard: Best seats in the house…
Kaidan: (deep exhale) It.. it feels like years since I just… sat down.
Shepard: I think we earned a rest.
Kaidan’s eyes roll back slightly in his head.
Shepard: Stay with me Kaidan, we’re almost through this…
Kaidan: (faintly) You did it Shepard… you.. really did it. Just like I knew you would. Despite what it looked like… I -I never doubted you.
Shepard: Kaidan…
Kaidan: I always… doubted myself. But you… I’m.. … (emotion breaks his voice) I’m so proud of you.
Shepard: Thanks, (soft, pained smile) Major.
Kaidan: H-heh… Shepard… I …
Kaidan’s frame slides back slowly, as the last of his words are lost in his final soft exhale. His eyes stare out ahead of him, at the vastness of space, and beyond.
Shepard: … Kaidan…?
Her brows knit with dulled realization, eyes stinging with the truth. Ignoring the wet pain coming from her side, she gently places her hand on his, as they both stare across the stars.
Shepard: … I love you too.

Also - best example that their ending wasn’t well thought out. No way Bioware would have missed that chance for fan tears! ;)
